Taking the scary out of pharmacology: Common drugs used in the ER & ICU

Program Description:

This course will cover an overview on some of the most common drugs that are used in veterinary patients in an ER & ICU setting. We will discuss an overview of each drug's pharmacology and its intended uses in a hospital setting.

Program Agenda:

Quick overview of receptors in body

  • Agonists vs, antagonists

Gastrointestinal, sedatives, pain medications, cardiology, CPR drugs, miscellaneous, and toxicology drugs

  • Generic vs. Brand name
  • Drug class
  • Mechanism of Action
  • Intended uses
  • Routes of administration
  • Potential adverse effects
  • Reversal agents (if applicable)

Learning Objectives:

1. Basic overall knowledge of why these common drugs are ordered and administered in our veterinary patients.

2. Attain knowledge of how different drugs function within the veterinary patient’s body, including intended effects, and any side effects.

3. How these different drugs work for patients in an ER & ICU setting.

4. Have more confidence when administering these drugs to our patients once a doctor has ordered them.
